Danielle Simpson was the 445th person executed by Texas since 1976. Simpson along with his brother, wife, and her cousin abducted and murdered an elderly Anderson County woman during a robbery in 2000. He was born in Palestine on October 26, 1979 to an African-American family. Simpson reportedly suffered head injuries at least twice in his childhood and often skipped school. There was conflicting testimony from relatives over whether he'd suffered seizures. His sister was employed as a Texas correctional officer and couldn't remember much positive about him outside that he attended church as a child. Simpson had to repeat kindergarten and the 3rd grade, was in special ed classes, and "very slow and learning disabled." He had repeated headaches and his mother often could not drive him to school due to her job schedule and he dropped out of school in the 9th grade, though he somehow achieved passing grades when he was in class. She kicked him out of the house a year before the murder after he molested his stepsister.Simpson was accused of several burglaries and was also a member of the Southside Crips gang. A month pror to the murder, he and two friends broke into a house, spray painted the walls, and wrote gang slogans, obscene words, and the phrase "White people should die." He punched his 16 year old wife Jennifer in the face at least once and argued with his sister when she caught him fondling his 9 year old cousin. Simpson stormed outside in a huff and smashed the windows of her car with a brick. He shot at an ex-girlfriend with a sawed-off shotgun and punched a teenage girl in the head. Simpson was charged with indecent acts with a minor for the above molestation of his cousin, pled guilty, and got ten years of probation and 600 hours of community service.
On January 26, 2000, Simpson, his wife, and 13 year old cousin Edward McCoy decided to rob the home of Geraldine Davidson, an 84 year old white woman and retired schoolteacher and church organist. He had robbed her home on at least two earlier occasions. The three went to the house, knocked on the front door, and got no answer. Satisfied that nobody was home, Simpson went in the garage, got a hammer and pick, and smashed out a window. Jennifer climbed inside and opened the door. She took a ring and some cash and Simpson took a watch. They were interrupted when Davidson arrived back. When the old woman stepped into the kitchen, Simpson ran up from behind and held a knife to her throat. He ordered her to give him money, so she got her purse. Simpson then ordered the others to restrain her while he went to get duct tape and a pillowcase. He taped her mouth, tied her hands behind her back, and told Jennifer to tape her legs.He put the pillowcase over her head, threw her over his shoulder, carried her out, and put her in the trunk of her car. The three then took the car and drove around for a while to purchase drugs. They smoked formaldehyde-laced marijuana cigarettes, picked up Simpson's younger brother Lionelle, and stopped at a fast food restaurant. Simpson sent his wife and cousin in to buy food while he waited outside, out of range of a security camera on the exterior of the building. They ate and drove around for a while in Palestine and Grapeland to visit Simpson's aunt and her daughter Shay. He showed off the captive to at least several acquaintances, none of whom saw fit to call police. At one point Davidson protested that she needed her medications. Simpson told her to shut up and slammed the trunk closed. Jennifer also made several calls with her cell phone.
Lionelle Simpson finally said they should just kill Davidson to be rid of her. Danielle stopped at a dead end street and they all got out. She pulled Davidson from the trunk and threw her to the ground. Danielle kicked her in the face after which they tied a cinder block to her and threw her in the Neches River. Davidson's body was found floating in the river the next day by a passing motorist. Autopsy found the cause of death to be freshwater drowning and hypothermia from exposure to the cold river water.Simpson dropped the other three off at home and then rented Davidson's car to friends in exchange for crack cocaine. The friends were later caught by police driving the car and told them how they got it. They went to arrest Simpson but he had fled. He and Lionelle were caught shortly afterwards hiding in a crack den. Simpson was found to be wearing Davidson's wedding ring.
He was convicted of first degree murder and robbery in December and sentenced to death. Lionelle Simpson was also convicted of first degree murder. Jennifer Simpson pled guilty to murder and received 30 to life--she will become eligible for parole in 2030. As both were younger than 18 when the crime was committed, they could not be sentenced to death. Edward McCoy was convicted in juvenile court and was paroled in 2007 after turning 21.Danielle Simpson was executed by lethal injection on November 18, 2009.
