25 years ago today, Wikipedia was created by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger (both of whom previously worked on Nupedia, another online encyclopedia). At its founding, it was originally English-only, and had the domain name www.wikipedia.com. Those that were on the Nupedia mailing list were the first to hear about the project.Wales has gone on to say that the economic essay, “The Use of Knowledge in Society” by Friedrich Hayek was foundational in shaping Wales’ views in how to organize Wikipedia. The word Wikipedia is a portmanteau of wiki (a Hawaiian word meaning “quick”) and encyclopedia. The first edit, also made 25 years ago, was to the site’s homepage, a line of text reading: “This is the new WikiPedia!”
>>18293253>it was originally English-onlyIn practice it still is.Non-English Wiki pages are either translations or talk about some local thing the world at large doesn't care about
>>18293253>soulless wiki media>academics socialist propaganda
>>18293767Aren’t you bored of these shitty talking points?
>>18293296If you care for some non-anglo historical topic, as many on this board do, local language wiki sites can give you quite a bit more info than the english one.
>>18293767>socialism is when Wikipedia doesn't say niggers are subhuman
>>18293253Wikipedia is pretty great and Im tired of pretending its not. Its excellent for rabbit holes and as a jumping off point before doing more indepth research on a given topic.>muh not trustworthy muh anyone can edit itAnd? There's a legion of autistic jannys that mostly keep complete nonsense from being added, though of course it does happen. The tone of articles can sometimes be biased as well but that is true of ANY resource. And anything added generally requires citation of sources. If something doesn't have a citation or has a questionable one, then take what you read with a grain of salt and do your own research. These things don't invalidate the entire site.
