Ramiro Gonzales was the 588th person executed by Texas since 1976. He kidnapped and murdered an 18 year old woman in 2001 and eventually confessed to her murder while serving a prison sentence for an unrelated offense. Gonzales was a Texas native born November 5, 1982; his mother was 17 and struggled with substance abuse, including during her pregnancy, which was an unplanned one, and she even tried to purposely overdose to induce a miscarriage. He was mostly raised by his grandparents and did not meet his father until he was 19 and ran into him in jail. Gonzales was molested several times as a child by his cousin and lost his virginity to an 18 year old woman at 12. He was a poor student and was drinking and using drugs by middle school. At the time of the murder he was employed in contracting and welding work.Bridget Townsend was a Houston native five months older than Gonzales. On January 15, 2001 she was at the home of her drug dealer boyfriend Joe Leal's house outside San Antonio; Leal was not home at the time. Gonzales was one of his regular customers and showed up at the house with the intent of stealing cocaine. Townsend saw him come in the house and tried to call Leal on the phone, so he grabbed her, tied her up, and stole money, but failed to find any drugs despite ransacking the house. Afterwards, Gonzales forced Townsend to get in his pickup truck and drove off. He went to his grandfather's ranch in Medina County where he raped Townsend and shot her execution-style in the head with a rifle despite her pleas that she would offer him money, drugs, or sex if he spared her. Gonzales dumped her body in a field near Bandera.
She was reported missing but her whereabouts remained unknown for some time to come. In September, Gonzales was arrested for abducting and raping a woman named Florence Teich at knifepoint on his grandfather's ranch, convicted of that offense, and given 20 to life. A year after beginning his sentence, he told Sheriff James MacMilliam that he knew what happened to Bridget Townsend. The sheriff did not initially believe him but became convinced when Gonzales described the location of her body. Twenty months after Townsend disappeared, her skeletonized remains were found in the field where she was dumped. Gonzales came up with several versions of what happened, including that her boyfriend did her in, a fictitious Mexican gang, that he'd just disposed of the body, or that he was acting on orders from others, but finally admitted that he alone had done the whole thing.Gonzales was charged with first degree murder and kidnapping. He was not brought to trial until August 2006; there was no need to be in a hurry as he was already incarcerated. The defense admitted his guilt but pleaded mitigating circumstances based on his deprived childhood and that he should be spared the death penalty. However, medical and psychiatric experts failed to find any evidence of mental dysfunction and noted that he had held down a job and otherwise demonstrated that he was fully capable of planning and carrying out the murder of Townsend. Since Gonzales was later convicted of an assault on a woman, he was clearly dangerous and likely to re-offend. In 2022, Edward Gripon, the psychiatrist who testified at his trial, believed his assessment had been incorrect and based on an outdated 1980s study on recidivism, and that Gonzales was likely no longer a danger to society.
He was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to death. Gonzales's first appeal was filed in 2009 and rejected, as were further appeals in 2012 and '15. He had exhausted all of his appeals by 2019 and his date of execution set for July 13, 2022, but he got a last minute reprive. Gonzales said he regretted his crime and would like to donate a kidney as penance.Gonzales was executed by lethal injection at Texas's Huntsville Unit on June 26, 2024. The date would have been Bridget Townsend's 42nd birthday, although only by coincidence. Her brother Dave did not believe Gonzales's story about having repented his actions and that he deserved what he got. Gonzales's lawyers, Thea Posel and Raoul Schonemann, released a statement saying that their client was no longer the same person who perpetrated Townsend's murder 23 years prior, but someone who was "a deeply spiritual, generous, patient, and intentional" person filled with remorse for his actions.

He interrogated her and asked if Leal had any drugs. Townsend said no, so he took her to his truck, turning off the outside light so he couldn't be seen.>He drove Townsend to his grandfather's ranch and got the latter's .243 hunting rifle. Gonzales decided he had to kill her so she wouldn't tell that he'd ransacked her boyfriend's house. He went out to the field in a remote rural location, led her outside, and loaded the rifle. Townsend tried to bargain with him, so he took her back to the truck, raped her in there, and then led her back out to the field where he fired a single shot into her back. Gonzales went home and threw away the spent shell casing from the rifle.

He also called Gonzales since he'd been by the house earlier that day, but he denied knowing anything. Leal did not believe him.>Not until October 2002, after Gonzales's jailhouse confession, would Townsend's remains be located, or what was left of them after nearly two years of laying outdoors and being scattered by scavenging wildlife. The skull, most of the long bones, and several small bones were present, as were most of her clothes and jewelry, but the rib cage and vertebrae were missing and unaccounted for. Lead residue was found on her shirt, indicating a gunshot to the torso. Three rifles belonging to Gonzales's grandfather were seized by police and when shown the weapons, he indicated that the .243 was the one he used.
