The empire of the north sea lasted all of 20 years before it began falling apart.Also, that map is extremely exaggerated. Canute did not rule Finland, the Baltic tribes, or Iceland at all, and ruled only tiny patches of Scotland, Ireland, and Sweden. His actual empire looked like this.

Any other short lived but extremely soulful empires? I would be interested to see what would have happened without the Normans or the way NW European history would have unfolded if the North Sea Empire had staying power.
