what's the proper definition of elves from a philosophical perspective? Is it dependent on written definition or public "common knowledge", does any particular source take precedence and what are the criteria for those sources to be "better" than other.
How can we understand the various historical interpretations compared to the modern interpretations?

An elf is a person who has accumulated sufficient merit through several successive reincarnations in Germanic mythology as to become a minor deity.
Tolkien turned them into a discrete race rather than a loose amalgamation of different spirits for whatever reason, and that is the iteration of elves that we see in all media now.
