I have developed a theory by interpreting the myth of Hermaphroditus and Salmacis from a Platonic perspective.The myth goes: Hermaphrodtus is the child of Hermes and Aphrodite, a beautiful young man. Salmacis, a nymph of Artemis, cares very little for the hunt and instead turns her mind to beauty and vanity. One day, Hermaphroditus is bathing in a spring, and the nymph falls madly in love with him. She embraces him and prays that the two never be separated, and the Gods answer by fusing the two together, causing Hermaphroditus to become a woman with a penis. This is where we get the word "hermaphrodite".Essentially, my interpretation posits that Salmacis is the feminine aspect of the spirit overtaking the masculine body. The aggression displayed by Salmacis represents the torturous realization of gender dysphoria within the human being, and her fervent passion the effort one must take to transform oneself into a woman. However, in spite of this unforeseen and morally dubious situation, which causes much pain and suffering for both parties, the Gods ordain that the hermaphrodite is a righteous being, because they answer Salmacis' prayers and turn the two into a brand new being. The transsexual is not a distortion of the human form by nature or man himself, but exists by divine right. Hermaphroditus himself is unknowing of what will befall him and initially rejects the nymph's advances, mirroring both the unassuming childhood (or even adolescence) of most transsexuals, and perhaps the repression many fall into.I would go so far to say that Salmacis herself is the daimon of gender dysphoria, who attaches herself to those ordained by the Gods to become hermaphrodites. She is not benevolent or malevolent, but personifies the turmoil and beauty of the transsexual experience. She, of course, was also subversive to her companions, more aligned to Aphrodite than her leader, Artemis. In other interpretations, she was even the caretaker of a young Hermaphroditus.
