Is this a subtle way of saying that God made him be born blind so he could show off how awesome he is when curing him, similar to how God hardened Pharaoh's heart so he could show off how awesome he is when terrorizing the Egyptians? There should be a word for when someone creates problems for others so they can look good when fixing them, and it shouldn't be a compliment.

I've heard the punctuation in the English is poor (even harder when you crop out the next verse like OP did) and it could be read as something like "this guy and his family haven't sinned, BUT I need to heal him ASAP while I'm still on earth because God's work is to heal the wounded."

This interpretation would fit with the theology of famous verse Acts 10:38.
