How did they justify that belief when Germany had been Europe's intersection for most of it's history.
>why *should* Germany have been the leader of EuropeHRE; France is France, Iberian Kingdoms are Iberian Kingdoms, Italy is a patchwork of all sorts, the rest doesn't really count as major.>Germany had been Europe's intersectionBig population, big economy, big industry; these are the things that marked the start of Germany. In the VERY early days (long before Bismark) when the notion of a modern German nation state were circulating, many radicals (in particular Italian ones) believed it'd be a liberal nation which would carry the world into an enlightened future. When they destroyed the 2nd French Empire and pulled away from the rotting Habsburg Realm as the new big dogs in Europe, many believed they made a natural "leader" of continental Europe that wasn't stained by endless revolutions, economic stagnation or infinite instability like France+Habsburgs were.
They were the Assyrians of Europe
