The military coup that kicked everything off was launched by right-wing generals on July 17-18, 1936, precisely because they refused to accept the left-leaning popular front government that had won the February 1936 elections fair and square. The massive wave of anticlerical violence, burning churches, etc. happened mostly in the first months after the coup failed in Republican-held zones precisely because the coup shattered state authority. That hatred didn't come out of nowhere. Anticlericalism in Spain had deep roots going back to the 19th century, plus the Church was already viewed by much of the left as an enemy class institution propping up the old order.
