Orthodox people believe the Virgin Mary physically manifested during the first siege of Constantinople and she was killing Avars and Persians from the battlements.

They also believe that a virgin miraculously conceived and that a man rose from death.
Why should ghostly apparitions shock you when they make it clear they believe in all kinds of magical acts?

The legend goes that the Avar khagan was debating wherever to end the siege or not after his Slavs failed to break into the port when, in the middle of the night, he gazed upon the walls and saw a ghostly veiled woman staring back at him. This spooked him so much he called the siege off the next day causing the Persians to also do the same on the other side of the Bosphorus.
The church interpreted this as a sighting of the Virgin Mary, among dozens of others during the siege.

There is a Chiapanec legend that the virgin specifically showed up to suppress an Indian rebellion threatening the city of San Cristobal.
