>> 1991: Status upgraded back to an Autonomous Republic (specifically the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) just before the dissolution of the Soviet Union>> In response to his efforts, in 1995 the Ukrainian parliament scrapped the Crimean Constitution, abolished the post of president on March 17 and moved to depose and exile Meshkov from the country.[11][12] Ukrainian special forces entered Meshkov's residence, disarmed his bodyguards and put him on a plane to Moscow.[13]Crimea left the USSR as it’s own state but was swallowed up by Ukraine during turmoil of the 90s… how was this not an illegal invasion?
>>18362767They voted to join Ukraine in the 90s and not while under occupation and during an active war
>>18362842They voted to leave Ukraine in the early 2010s with over 90% agreement.
>>18363901yeah when the only other option was become their own entity
>>18362767A lot of insane shit happened during the breakup of the USSR. Several civil wars, shadow states. Kazakhstan nearly broke into a race war, Scientology almost took over Perm.
>>18362767I don't know what's so hard to understand in the word "autonomous". Crimea by all definitions was a part of Ukraine since 1954
>>18363924Nope, the peninsula was originally Gothic.
>>18363924It was defacto independent from Ukraine under Meshkov in the 90s before Kiev sent in troops to oust him. This way before Kiev was just a EU/ USA mouth piece too so don’t give me “they always saw themselves as Ukrainians.”
>>18363918The currecnt Russia-Ukraine was is just an aftershock of the breakup of the USSR. It's a war that should have happened in the 1990s but Russia was too bankrupt to assert its position back then, hence why Baltic states could join NATO without as much of a fart being made from Moscow. The war we're seeing now is basically the Bosnia wars, nearly copy-paste, but it's been delayed.
>>18364184As I said in the other thread on Yugoslavia the only way Communists could have prevented this outside of not breaking apart the USSR in 91 was making same race/ ethnicity marriage illegal (think Paraguay in 1800s) and splitting apart each Republic by drawing up random squares for example how we did Wyoming, Colorado and similar in the USA.Giving each minority an oblast or a republic had the opposite effect of amping up ethnic conflicts by 11.
>>18364161>defacto independent from UkraineThis doesn't mean anything. It's like saying Tatarstan or Chechnya were illegally annexed in the 90s because they were de-facto independent too
>>18362767It was upgraded to an ASSR, not an SSR, and an ASSR was always part of an SSR, in Crimeas case Ukraine.Today the only independent state that was an ASSR before dissolution is Abkhazia, but almost the entire world do not recognize it as such as secession cannot be unilateral according to international law.
