How much of this is a failure in ancient sources to draw a distinction between non combatants and front line troops? I imagine the typical large ancient army would have 10s of thousands of support staff. Slaves, cooks, engineers etc . Most military employees today aren’t frontline “soldiers”

I'm always skeptical of Ancient sources for this reason. The largest armies able to be fielded in the middle ages were around 20-30 thousand, and those were damn expensive. I don't believe that the Romans were routinely frightening with armies of 50,000 people.
