Why didn't the evil patriarchy force women to row on galleys?
>>18363354The rowers on these ships were not slaves. That was a thematic element added by Kubrick
>>18363354Cause it was a well payed and kinda comfy job.
>>18363364>>18363366The Ottomans did use slaves and the Italians were known to use prisoners.
>>18363364God damn, you really are fucking thick.Volunteer galley rowers are the exception to the rule, Athens is the best example of that.Nearly everyone else used slaves. In fact, that might have been a determining factor in the Catholic victory over the Turks at Lepanto, since the Christian galley slaves the Turks were using rose up in the middle of the battle.
>>18363366>Rowing was comfy Kys
>>18363366t.office worker who never had a real job
>>18363625I was never a Roman or Greek rower but the main source of power for travel came from the winds, rowers were only used when the winds failed (and you couldnt wait it out) or for detailed maneuvering like when docking in a harbor or navigating a rocky coast. So a big part of the job was waiting around for the signal to start rowing or helping the sailors out. Yes it was physically taxing but thats true for any kind of manual labor, especially in antiquity. In exchange you got a relatively good salary, were considered skilled labor (giving you some negotiating power against the captain) and got to travel around the empire. So yeah I would say it was a cool and comfy job to have. Being on a military vessel during wartime sucked of course because of the constant risks of dying a horrible death, but that just the soldiers life. And galley slaves are a whole different story.
>>18363354>Why didn't the evil patriarchy force women to row on galleys?Because the patriarchy recognized that rowing galleys was a great use for your surplus male population and a very poor use of your female population, which needed to produce children. It's very simple math, every woman needed to produce at least 4 children just to keep the population level. Not just the woman that made good mothers, or the ones that really really wanted that in their lives, EVERY woman needed to do it or everything would fall apart. That's basically a lifetime dedicated solely to popping out offspring.
>>18363526>Volunteer galley rowers are the exception to the ruleEveryone on antiquity used free rowers, Rome, Carthage, Athens. The only time galley slaves were used in antiquity was during times of massive manpower shortages, like the Punic Wars. And in those cases slaves would be offered their freedom in reward for their service.Galley slaves are a early modern phenomenon because complex ramming maneuvers were abandoned in favor of firepower and bashing ships together for boarding. And even then each oar was usually operated by two slaves and a free rower setting the rhythm.
