So if a Christian should claim that his religion gives him purpose or meaning or whatever, in short that it makes him feel good and satifies his desires, or conversely that he finds irreligion or atheism despressing, then I can only answer that this is perfectly in accordance with the idea that Christianity (and all religion) is a system invented by and for human beings. The same may be said in respect of any utility it may provide to society, only that rather than self-deception it would involve an imposition by priests and rulers for the sake of gain.Indeed, it is difficult to imagine that beings could exist who possess both the power of imagination and the ability to suffer and feel pleasure from that which they imagine, who would not invent falsehoods for their own purposes.
