It was only in the late 70s and early 80s that things changed somewhat after the Iranian revolution and Mujahedeen fighting the commies in Afghanistan.

A better question to ask is ”why anti-religious socialist movements didn’t succeed in Arab world” and that’s actually pretty fucking obvious when you consider that how tightly Islam is intertwined with Arab culture in general. Soviets could pull off their anti-Orthodox movement because people were on average fed up with the Tsarist system and the Orthodox church was seen as a part of it, but there was no similar event that would pivot Arabs away from Islam, and thus any socialisy movement that demanded uncompromising anti-religious stance never had any chance in Arab world.
