>What is /phil/ Philosophy General?
A general for readers, students, and armchair thinkers interested in philosophy, whether it be Western, Eastern, analytic, continental, ancient, contemporary. We discuss primary texts, secondary literature, online lectures, podcasts.

>Why read philosophy?
Politics, science, psychology, etc. all began with or were inspired by someone who thought philosophically. Basically, if you are interested in just about anything, philosophy will help you better understand that subject. Because it is at the foundation of every conceptual institution made or discovered by humans, it is in the underbelly of human experience, and so it is worth taking seriously.

>Why study philosophy formally?
Surprisingly versatile and undervalued. Phil majors consistently score among the highest on the LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. Strong pipeline into law, policy, ethics consulting, AI alignment, and academia.

who has the best philosophy podcast ? I like robinson erhardt but hes heavy on the science end of things
>>
Is anyone else too scared to formally study philosophy in fear of becoming mentally locked with an idea? Like it being much harder think outside of the box once you learn of the box. Is this a retarded fear?

a lot of very creative people are inspired by theory and philosophy, so I wouldnt worry about losing the ability to think outside the box. I will say however many creative people (musicians, writers, painters) seem to have a very cursory understanding of whichever philosopher and then they just run with that. I'm sure there are people who actually study it too, but if your goal is to be creative then idk keep your goal in mind.

but no, i do not think studying philosophy will harm your ability to think outside the box. there isnt some super specific thing outside the box to be familiar with anyway

Yeah i suppose it wouldnt hurt to atleast study the things im already familiar with to see if there is a next stage or more nuance to it. I feel like ive pretty much hit a brick wall on some subjects anyway
