Timur was a fucking nut. It's like he wanted to conquer all of Asia because he thought that's what he was supposed to do.
He loved the arts and architecture and wanted to be seen as a holy warrior for Islam, but he didn't seem to actually give a shit and repeatedly burned entire cities down and slaughtered everyone in sight. He would cart off all the shiny shit and whatever traumatized artists and craftsmen he could capture to labor like slaves in Samarkand. All the buildings he designed collapsed within a generation. He built more skull-stacks out of fellow Muslims than anyone else.
The Mongols were an invading, alien force that transformed the world and connected east and west. You can't follow in those footsteps or inhabit that legacy just by re-buttfucking all the cities of Persia, the Levant and the Caucasus.
I wonder if he could have seriously knocked over China if he hadn't died.
