How many human ethnicities are there? Is it possible to list all of them in a single map?
hello?
>>18391356That's a lot of ocean.>How many human ethnicities are there? A lot. But ethnicity isn't exactly a standardized category that has a clear list of groupings that don't need to explain themselves. Two people could mean some very different things when using the term. When using parameters other than just ancestry, dividing people into clear non-overlapping ethnicities might involve choices that could feel arbitrary to some. There is always going to be some overlap between some ethnicities, particularly when we use factors outside of ancestry alone.Ethnicities that are marked primarily by some religious association are a good example of this really. Think Jews and Bosniaks. A lot of people consider these sorts of groups as ethnicities, and a lot of others don't. These groups can also happen to overlap with ethnicities other than their own group. Ancestry of assimilated secular Jews for example can be mixed or even be nearly completely of non-Jewish origin, but still be considered a Jew because of parental associations. Also something to consider is that ethnicities can often be broken up or grouped together into other ethnicities. Americans into their respective regions (Southerners, Northerners, etc.), or Americans and Canadians into a broad Anglophone North Americans. However you choose to define an ethnicity would affect the number of them existing in your list.>Is it possible to list all of them in a single map?Not really in my opinion, unless you are to make broad sweeping generalizations. There's a lot of tiny outliers.I really like Masaman's ethno-racial map, but even Masaman would admit it wouldn't really be possible for him to represent everything under the sun.
