Ynobe Matthews was the 314th person executed by Texas since 1976. He murdered a young woman in College Station in 2000 and was later implicated in a second murder the year before. Matthews is considered a possible serial killer. An African-American, he was born on April 14, 1976 (Ynobe is "Ebony" spelled backwards). He attended Lake Highlands High School to the 11th grade, was a father of four, and at the time of the murder was working as a shelf stocker at a grocery store in College Station. On May 27, 2000, Carolyn Casey, 21, attended a party at her College Station apartment complex. Matthews, who was living in the same complex with a friend, was also at the party. He and Casey knew each other and at some point she went with him to a grocery store to buy alcoholic drinks.When Casey came back to the party, she felt sick and left alone to go back to her apartment. Matthews was not at the party. He came back a bit later and the other guests at the party noticed that he smelled "extremely bad" and that the smell was not normal body odor.
Some time after 1:30 AM on May 28, Casey's neighbor heard a series of thumping sounds coming from her apartment. At 4:50 AM, firefighters responded to a report of a fire in the apartment. Smoke was coming out of it and escaping through a partially opened window near the door. The window screen was cut and folded outward, obviously done so the perpetrator could put his hand inside and unlock the door to the apartment. Inside, the firefighters found a small fire burning on the flesh of Casey's feet. She lay dead, wearing only a T-shirt and socks, and laying so that her upper body was propped against the side of the bed and the lower half lying on the floor. Her inner thighs and genital area were burned. Paper and a container of pens and makeup brushes were placed between her legs, apparently as combustible material. The burned area between her legs contained fecal matter.On the bed was a pair of torn panties which were filled with feces. The waistband was under the bedding and Casey's purse was dumped onto the living room table. Her keys were missing but most other valuables were still in the apartment. The toilet seat in the bathroom was up, towels lay on the floor, and the fire alarm sat in the sink. A partial knife set was found in the kitchen. One of the knives from the set was under Casey's bed. Towels matching those found on the bathroom floor and Casey's keys were later found in one of the apartment complex dumpsters. The cause of death was manual strangulation.
Matthews and his roommate were questioned by police. He gave them the clothes he wore the night of the party and consented to giving fluid and hair samples. Fibers matching his clothes were found on and around Casey's body and some fibers from her panties on his shirt. Skin particles found under her fingernails also proved to match his DNA.After being told about this, Matthews replied that he and Casey had been dating on and off for the past few weeks and admitted that he was in her apartment on the 28th for a consensual sexual encounter. He said he ripped her panties off while they were "fooling around" after which they got into an argument, supposedly because she was trying to hit on his younger brother, that culminated in his throwing her to the bed and choking her to death. Matthews set her legs and genital area on fire to destroy his semen, wiped his fingerprints from the apartment, and cut the window screen so it would look like a break-in. None of Casey's acquaintances, when asked, said that her and Matthews had been romantically involved. The medical examiner also said that it is common for people to void their bowels when they're terrified. Matthews's attempt to conceal his crime by lighting Casey's body on fire had at least partially succeeded; no semen was found anywhere on her.
Matthews was tried in June 2001 for Casey's murder. During the trial, witnesses testified that he had assaulted and raped or attempted to rape five other women, some quite violently; one victim said he liked to choke her repeatedly to the point of unconsciousness, then let up and do it again once she came to. A female correctional officer at the Brazos County Jail also testified that he made aggressive sexual advances on her. In addition, Matthews broke a car windshield during a fight, threatened another man during an argument over a marijuana purchase, and that he had prior arrests for cocaine possession and animal cruelty. While incarcerated, he threw a drinking cup at a female C/O with enough force to break the glass face of a clock in the room and that he had to be escorted by two officers and put in leg irons at all times when leaving his cell.He was also linked to a further murder. On May 1, 1999, a jogger in Brazos County found a dead woman in a ditch, later identified as 21 year old Jamie Hart. She had a black eye and several bruises to the left side of the head and had been strangled with a ligature, but not with enough force to kill her. Hart was then raped and thrown out a moving vehicle while still alive. She suffered an injury to the cervical spine and head injuries that resulted in brain swelling and ultimately death. The former would have left her paralyzed from the waist down if she'd lived. Hart's car was parked a short distance from the body, its lights on and the engine still running; Matthews's fingerprints were found on the outside of the vehicle and DNA would further prove his culpability. Matthews later confessed to murdering Jamie Hart, saying he forced his way into her car and attacked her.
Matthews was found guilty on June 15 and sentenced to death. He admitted that he'd been drinking the entire weekend of Carolyn Casey's murder and had also been on a drug binge. Matthews declined to appeal his sentence and was executed by lethal injection on January 6, 2004 after a final meal of three pieces of fried chicken, one pork chop, two pieces of fried fish, strawberry ice cream, and a six pack of Coca-Cola. He also requested a pack of Newport cigarettes but this was declined due to the prison's no smoking policy.

Texas and Florida have each carried out an execution in the past week, but they were for murders committed in the late 00s and early 10s so too recent, can't do a thread about those.
