If he didn't exist that only brings up more questions about who came up with the philosophy that was ascribed to him and why was Socrates invented.

I mean both Xenophon and Plato wrote about him, and they are 2 different people from different backgrounds, ones a military comader and the other an Athenian noble /philosopher.

Its a convoluted mess. I honestly think Alcibiades was a dialogue between Alcibiades and Critias instead of Socrates.
A lot of names get mixed up in other conversations. Even Critias can be acknowledged by several different versions of the name, without being about his father or grandfather.
