Their people have the highest rates of food stamps and welfare. They have some of the lowest average IQ. They have some of the highest rates of inadequate sewage treatment (IE failed systems or never had one to begin with), lack of municipal water, garbage pickup, you name it. Large parts of the south east wouldn't be considered current by 1950s standards, let alone 21st century standard. I guess losing that war was the south's version of getting colonized.
