As the majority of the population in places like Mexico and the Central American states are Mestizo or near-full native, they would naturally mix badly with the more strictly racialised Anglo descendants up north. The snobbery of WASPs and those somewhat similar to them (German and Scandi arrivals in the mid-1800s, for example) would clash with the mixed race south/west, and English/Spanish would then assume a heavily racialised aspect. The end result being that those Mexians today who associate pride with their language - even if it's technically a conquerer's tongue - are more so showing pride for their race, culture, history, etc. The language is just a loud, abrasive (depending on your pov) symbol of that pride
Most latinos are part amerindian anyway so from the nativist angle they have all the right to the land of their own countries, pure amerindians are in percentual terms as uncommon as pure europeans.
