also, the right line, passing east of Japan, is an afterthought. the original signatories thought and argued under an implicit flat earth assumption even though they knew the world was spherical. otherwise they would not have talked about 'east' and 'west' when referring to sides of the line but the hemisphere containing africa and not containing africa.
