Why are britons & central europeans so irreligious?
>>
the protestant reformation made people rely on the Bible as the only source of divine knowledge, instead of the wisdom and traditions of the early church fathers, councils, saints, etc.

once you turn a book into an idol, its the easiest thing for higher criticism and scholars to point out random contradiction #6 on Exodus and kill the faith of prots because they dont have other authorities.

prots dont have sacraments so they also lack the grace provided by baptism, the eucharist, etc.

Surely there's more to it than that though, right?

Spain is barely less religious than the UK

Brits are fairly chill people. A lot of Abrahamic morality and teachings just seem bizarre and cruel to us. Not a lot of people here want to follow religions which tell you that you will burn in hellfire for all eternity for being a disbeliever, or that your entire life down to what you eat/drink or who you date should be dictated by a God.

It just doesn't jive with our outlook on life. You will note that the few British people who are Christians usually follow a very vague and watered-down form of it where only truly evil people go to hell, and where heaven is a place of happiness where you get to meet all your deceased relatives and pets.

Yeah but like, what is the historical reason for the irreligiosity throughout europe?

For Protestant countries the answer is obvious. For Catholic ones, it has to do with copying the ideas of the French Revolution.

It's pretty interesting how as people begin to get literate and learn to read their own holy book.
They stop believing in it.
I wonder if people back then, who could read and did read the Bible, thought it was bullshit?

High standard of living + being allowed to question religion and religious institutions without being imprisoned or executed. Why should they be religious?

>I wonder if people back then, who could read and did read the Bible, thought it was bullshit?
Yes-ish. Just read Origen on literalism.
Religious thought thrives off mysticism, when you strip it down to a holy text all the bullshit will come to light very quickly.
>>
>>18405513
Who's to say its bullshit anyways? Didn't know you were an authority on religious texts.
