>Old World diseases like smallpox and measles caused the death of approximately 90% to 95% of the indigenous population of the Americas following European contact>This catastrophic population decline that is known as the Great Dying is considered one of the largest human mortality events in history>The indigenous population of Central Mexico fell from roughly 10-20 million in 1518 to about 1 million by 1650 which is a decline of over 90%>The indigenous populations of Peru and the Andes fell by 80% within forty years of European contact>A Dutch observer in New Netherland (present day New York) in North America reported in 1656 that indigenous peoples told him their population had been "melted down" by disease with "nine-tenths of them" having died since the arrival of EuropeansIt simply does not matter how wide the technological gap was or how militarily superior whites were. The American natives were doomed no matter what because they had no immunity to the Old World diseases the white colonizers brought. Anyone can colonize and settle entire continents if the vast majority of the people living there die from disease.
Also remember plague blankets
>europeans so superior they do a biological warfare centuries before germ theorytruly amazing, they really deserved all that land then
>>18406492>90% died of disease >therefore it's OK to enslave and ethnically cleanse the survivors
>>18406512It's called conquest. Stop being so moralistic about history and grow the fuck up.
>>18406536Who's being moralistic? OP was trying to say that it wasn't conquest because there were also devastating plagues happening at the same time.
The most intereting fact is that it didn't happen in reverse. From what I gather is because many of these diseases are zoonotic and there is only one domesticable animal in America: Llamas. Every other domesticated animal come from somewhere else.
>>18406547>there is only one domesticable animal in Americabecause the others were hunted to extinction
>>18406547but it did happen in reverse, syphilis was a new world disease and infected europe
>>18406503You think we come from countries made of magic fine rocks we can turn to glass with fire and that we just magically wasted all that time having not invented the microscope? Oh, let me guess, you read the REAL DATE(TM) on a Wiki page.>inb4 nuh uh and sourcing some other fag retard who wants me to believe we didn't know how to make glass blow up images with light behind it for a hundred thousand years while living in a massive desert
>>18406542>OP was trying to say that it wasn't conquestOP never said such thing, just that regardless of the Europeans' intentions, the peoples of the Americas would've gotten fucked anyway due to disease. And this is just a neutral historical fact.
>>18406492We Europeans really were dirty fuckers. We even used to venerate a saint because she apparently never bathed. "Imagine the smell" indeed
>>18406536Moralism has no refutation. Anyone who attempts to define morality by subjective terms, and not by primordial instinct, is lying.
>>18406492>The American natives were doomed no matter what because they had no immunity to the Old World diseases the white colonizers brought.Ironically this could have been cushioned if the Vikings successful had a colony in the Americas by letting the new worlders get sick sooner and thus recover sooner as well
>>18406536Bros shadowboxing against an argument that doesn't exist and is getting mad over it lol
>>18406785But the problem is that the Vikings could never have realistically colonized Vinland..interesting to thing about it tho
This must be why so many 'Native Americans' today are mixed race. Half of Seminole and Cherokee men, for example, are R1b
>>18406652It seemed like the implication is that European conquests didn't make the situation any worse for the natives than the plagues did by themselves. That once they gained the status of 'fucked' it wasn't possible to injure them further. This isn't a question of whether the European conquest was 'moral', it's just about whether it did harm to the natives.
>>18406492Europeans are just dirty as fuck. They're a walking plague. They have been Satan to every other race in the world.
>>18406835>It seemed like the implication is that European conquests didn't make the situation any worse for the natives than the plagues did by themselves.I mean, it is true that the diseases destroyed them to a degree that Europeans couldn't have, HernĂ¡n Cortes wouldn't have been able to conquer Mexico if smallpox hadn't decimated the Aztecs' numbers.
