Why is it that Coptic Orthodox churches have a similar structure to Eastern Orthodox churches as opposed to Syriac Orthodox churches which appear more similar to Nestorian churches? The Copts and Syriacs are both in communion with one another (hence the Oriental Orthodox Church), but there appear to be differing levels of iconodulia among them with the Copts having more of it sorta similar to the Greeks. tldr; Exactly why do Coptic churches appear close to Greek churches?
I think they were more open to be influenced by the chalcedonian patriarchate of Alexandria and they adopted iconostasis type structures. Whereas Armenians and Syriacs didn’t really develop it and kept the altar curtain only. Especially the Armenians were opposed to most Byzantine rite influence as Georgian or Byzantine Greek influence
>>18407855Also I don’t think syriacs and Copts are in communion
Syriac isn't one church tradition. It has Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholic and Nestorian versions. They're all in separate communions
>>18407870The Syriac Orthodox, Malankara Orthodox, and Coptic Orthodox Church are all in full communion and belong to the Oriental Orthodox Church. >>18407995The Syriac Rite has both western and eastern variants relative to lands between Syria and India. The western Syriac rites can be found in the Syriac Orthodox Church, Syriac Catholic Church, Maronite Catholic Church, Malankara Orthodox Church, and the Mar Thoma Syrian Church. The east Syriac rites can be found in the Assyrian Church of the East, Ancient Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, and the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.
There really is no good reason for Eastern and Oriental to not be in communion with each other.
>>18408046Also notably the Syro-Malabar and Chaldean liturgy of Addai and Mari is the only current rite that does not bless the Eucharist with the Words of Institution ("this is my blood" etc). Rome is in full communion with them after they decided in 2001 that this was a perfectly valid form and transubstantion works properly.
>>18407855They're retarded because they use icons even though they weren't even part of Nicaea II unless they retroactively approve of Chalcedon
>>18408092The pope is willing to accept a lot if you submit to him. Doesn't really mean anything from people that claim that other religions are also a path to God
>>18408046>>18408092Antioch and Alexandria themselves have multiple churches in separate communions.
>>18407855According to Wikipedia on Biblical canons, they have the exact same 73-book canon as the Catholic Church being the only other Apostolic Church to do so, which is weird because the Eastern Orthodox in Alexandria and Syriac Orthodox Church in the Oriental Orthodox Communion both have 3 Maccabees and 1 Esdras from the Septuagint which originated in Alexandria. My only conclusion is that the Coptic Orthodox Church changed drastically because of the Council of Florence (1439-1445) where the Catholic Church sought to reunify with the Eastern Churches even though they didn’t reunite.
>>18410785I don't think the Copts were at FlorenceNot all the material in the Septuagint is considered canon even in the churches that use it like the Psalms of Solomon and the OdesIt's like how the Prayer of Manasseh and 3 and 4 Esdras were retained in an appendix to the Clementine Vulgate after Trent ruled them apocryphal
>>18408092But does it bless the Eucharist in any other way.
>>18411623Well, that Wikipedia article says the Coptic Orthodox use the Prayer of Manasseh in their liturgy. Someone showed me the Bible section of a Coptic Orthodox app on his phone and it included the Prayer of Manasseh with no distinction from the other books. Maybe the Wikipedia article is wrong. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_canon
>>18408092This is a tame concession compared to what the first generations of Jesuits were willing to bend the Latin Rite do adapt it to the local religions
>>18407870>Coptic OrthodoxYou are thinkin of the Church(es) of the East. There are two left now. The other one joining the catholics a while back.
