God told them the truth in a way that was beneficial for them, Satan told them the "truth" in a way that would hurt them. Adam and Eve freely genuinely chose the option that would justifiably lead to their death but God was merciful and gave them what they didn't deserve when Christ descended to hell to save even them.

Although I suppose in Deuteronomy when there is an insurrection against Moses the mutineers are miraculously killed by a fissure opening up in the ground causing them to fall to their death, and the hebrew uses oddly anthropomorphized terms to describe them being "swallowed" by the earth as if it ate them.
