>As the chronicler says, this people's army was commanded by about ten men of humble origins, among whom were barbers, tooth pullers, cobblers, shroud workers, and garbage collectors. Popular festivals with street parties and celebrations were held in Córdoba. The animosity against the Berbers grew by the moment, and Caliph al-Mahdi decreed that Africans could not ride, carry weapons, or appear in the Alcázar. The Berber houses in al-Rushafa were looted, and attacks on the garrisons stationed in Madinat al-Zahra multiplied. Among the measures adopted by al-Mahdi was the forced discharge of seven thousand men from the caliphal army, primarily affecting the mawlas, fatas, gilman, abid, and especially the North African mercenaries. These discharged men attempted a revolt by appealing to a grandson of 'Abd al-Rahman III, named Hisham ibn Sulayman al-Rashid. The rebels were defeated, and after al-Rashid's execution, al-Mahdi ordered the persecution of the Berbers, even announcing a reward for anyone who brought in the head of an African. Many of these Berbers were killed, and their wives and children were sold at Dar al-Banat, "The House of the Young Women." This xenophobia even extended to Syrians, Persians, and other foreigners.
