Would anything be meaningfully about our timeline if South Africa had kept its nuclear weapons?
>>

No. Who the fuck would they use it as deterrent for? Nukes are costly to keep and maintain and their use as a deterrent alongside the whole "no one would fuck up their own and the global economy for a shitty invasion" reasoning got holes poked into it.
>>
>>18412973
considering no one has invaded SA even without a nuclear deterrent, and they have not been threatened with the use of atomic weapons by another country, or been in a position where making threats with atomic weapons would be useful, I'm gonna say no

The big reason that they got them in the first place was because they feared a scenario in which Soviet backed communists from Mozambique and Angola would zerg rush S. Africa. They obviously didn't need them for that after 1991.
And disclosing that they had them and getting rid of them was a part of their coming clean period and trying not to be a international parish anymore after apartheid.
