I believed Poland was a majority-Jewish country where everybody followed Judaism, and that Hitler invaded them so he could capture all the Jews there. I didn't learn otherwise until I was 13, when I played Europa Universalis 3 and noticed Poland and all its provinces were listed as Catholic.

What were some dumb, wrong things you believed about history as a child?
>>
i thought there was land at the north pole
for some reason santa lives where there's no fuck off huge continent but its just pack ice

>What were some dumb, wrong things you believed about history as a child?
I thought jews were innocent and just hated because they rejected Jesus

>>18414070
>i thought there was land at the north pole
Also this, for some reason I have a faint memory of seeing a landmass slightly smaller than Greenland over there in a map, and assumed just like Antarctica it was split between a bunch of nations. Only a few years later when looking at a map did I notice it was missing it and that's when I discovered. I probably saw some shitty map with two Greenlands idk
>>
I thought Jews stopped existing in 33AD and I thought the dudes Hitler didn't like were different guys
>>
I thought Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism were the same thing. I thought Mexico was in South America

I did the dumb mistake of believing that when there was a time period in a war's name, it meant that it actually lasted for that time period, no more, no less.

WHO THE FUCK WROTE THIS SHIT?

Close enough

my dad was mormon and taught me a lot of mormon oddities
the weirdest was the tribes of israel going to america

I believed in the bible as a kid but after reading just the old testament, I found a god who is a very evil god that either murders or allows murders to happen. A subverted jewish history book the writers plagiarized to make their religion credible.

I once thought "South America" meant the Southern United States

I thought turkish people spoke arabic and that "byzantium" was some mesopotamian empire

i've had an interest in geography for as long as i can remember
and the kindergarten that i attended as a kid was a christian one
so when my kindergarten teacher taught us about how the israelites fought against the philistines
i got confused and thought something like
"aren't israel and the philippines pretty far away from each other?"
>>
>>18413992
I thought that amazons were supposed to live in the amazon region in South America instead of somewhere in the caucasus. I was confused when the amazons appeared in aladdin (the cartoon series) and thought that they went all the way from the americas to arabia.

I didn’t know America practiced unrestricted submarine warfare in ww2 till I was like 27
>>
>>18413992
I didn't really register that Hitler was the actual official leader of Germany until I was like, 9 years old. My dumbass brain thought he was just acting independently that whole time and had his own private army but also that WW2 against Germany was just a wholly separate ordeal from that lmao

I AM SORRY TO BE THE ONE TO TELL YOU THIS, BUT «SANTA CLAUS» IS NOT REAL.

I remember a Disney cartoon where they sang about "Magellan's crooked strait". And I thought that all straits were supposed to be straight. I also thought that because Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill were always grouped together that they must all be based on real people because Johnny Appleseed was a real historical figure. Turns out Paul Bunyan is vaguely based off a number of Quebecois woodsman, but Pecos Bill is more or less completely fictional.

>America practiced unrestricted submarine warfare in ww2
Not issue with this; but it ks kind of moot since even the japanese fleet was kind under blockade since 1942.

No issue with this US's policy, but it is kind of moot since even the japanese fleet was kind of under blockade since mid 1942.

>Julius caesar was attacked by his opponents who he had given clemency for fighting against him.
Many of the liberators were given clemency, but many other were his former legatus (Gaius Trebonius, Decimus albunius junius brutus and lucius minicius basilus).

THAT IS SAINT NICHOLAS, NOT «SANTA CLAUS».

Quickly realized the truth, but i was nearly tricked by the misrepresentation about the removal of the Iranian PM in 1953.
Despite some propagandistic claims, PM wasn't the legal ruler of Iran, the Shah was the ruler before and after Mossadegh's mandate as PM.
Furthermore, he was lawfully and morally removed and seize for his bad management and his attempt to undermine the Shah's authority.

>>18415024
>That is Sint Nicolaas, not "Sint Nicolaas"
Now you're gonna claim that Jeeezus H. Christ didn't exist.

Yeah, you often hear the assertion "the US installed the Shah in 1953" which is simply not true.

Nukes are unironically overrated. You would have to fire quite a few to do serious damage to the wider world. Chernobyl was far worse than Hiroshima or Nagasaki

I thought Hitler was "Hilter" for some time b/c I didn't hear his name spoken until I was maybe 10, and my eyesight was poor when I read about him.
All the religious-adjacent stuff, I never really believed.

Indeed, it was initially a more British led initiative that later got gradually more and more taken over by the Americans, and it started back in the 20's. In '53 they didn't install the Shah, but rather reinstalled him, or perhaps more accurately reaffirmed his power by helping him return, arresting Mossadegh and gunning down several thousand protesters who demanded democratisation.

Definitely Thebes. For a very long time I thought the Egyptian and Greek city were one and the same, so in Disney's Hercules I thought they were actually in Egypt, but that Egyptian Thebes was a Greek colony ir something.

There's like 10 million of them and slowly growing, that's not a near extinction population, even if they don't number in the billions.

I thought americans are even whiter than europeans because I once saw a very pale american on tv.
I also thought all of europe had been controlled by dark people (or something) once because my father made an offhand comment where he only meant spain (I guess. I'm not spanish.)
>>
>>18413992
i thought americans and englishers/europeans were from different races, and that the english language was somehow originated in the us
