Why aren't iberians included in it?
>>18414021Columbus wasn't born in Spain
spain has few intellectual achievements
>>18414021According to the guy who created this map (Charles Murray), it was a brain drain of Jews to Dutch, hue.https://www.commentary.org/articles/charles-murray/jewish-genius/>After being expelled from Spain at the end of the 15th century, Sephardi Jews rose to distinction in many of the countries where they settled. Some economic historians have traced the decline of Spain after 1500, and the subsequent rise of the Netherlands, in part to the Sephardi commercial talent that was transferred from the one to the other. Centuries later, in England, one could point to such Sephardi eminences as Benjamin Disraeli and the economist David Ricardo
>>18414021because the book was written by an anglo. Also his methods may be solid (compiling lists of good reference books on a subject, collecting the persons mentioned there and ranking them according to text length) but they are biased - the primary selection of topics (several fields among the arts and sciences from 800 BC to 1950), then the books used, and the ranking method used. But yeah, clustering happens.

>>18414021Most Iberian achievements are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. There are no equivalent figures in Portugal or Spain to men like da Vinci or Newton. That said there are no equivalent figures to men like Vacso da Gama, Francisco de Almeida, Afonso de Albuquerque, and Hernán Cortés. Even for someone like Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba for whom there are comparable figures still manages to stand out for his military achievements.>>18414025Columbus was born in Genoa. But for over a decade he lived and worked in Portugal and was married to a Portuguese wife. Portuguese navigation had already pioneered for about a century each of the techniques and technologies he would use to cross the Atlantic. Astronomy, Cartography, and Shipbuilding had all been worked out by generations of Portuguese craftsmen. The Age of Discovery was built on a Portuguese foundation.
>>18414021>97% of human accomplishmentHow does one objectively, mathematically calculate percentage of human accomplishments?
>>18414021People like this man (a Spanish "Da Vinci" who, among other things, invented the steam engine) didn't even have English Wikipedia entries a few years agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jer%C3%B3nimo_de_Ayanz_y_BeaumontIf men like him were ignored, you can get an idea of many other Iberian inventors had "memory-holed status" when this man wrote that book.

>>18414232>Why is this held in sich high regard here when it's shunned by every half serious academics, I don't knowBecause it confirms biases of course.
>>18415637it matches up extremely well with which countries matter and which countries don't.
>>18415639None of those countries matter today.Furthermore, their historical progress owes more to them not being neighboured by savages from Asia and Africa than they do from some made up Anglo-Saxon supremacy.
>>18415639>>18415639Which is effectively a confirmation of biases. Not to mention all the fighting people do over the edge cases
>>18414021>area stretches out to cover all of denmark in the north>barely edges in Naples and Marseille in the southYou just know the author counted all terroni as neapolitan because of the kingdom's hyper-centralized cultural life and only added Marseille because trying the same trick with Paris would have given away the game immediately.
>>18415654>>18415661>None of those countries matter today.yes they do + their colonies inherit their influence, america is incredibly important because the UK and Germany werelatin america is not important because spain and portugal are not importantit's that simple
Part of the problem with the Portuguese in the historical record is that so much of their history was erased by the 1755 earthquake, tsunami, and fire that killed half of Lisbon and destroyed most of the archives. Whoever made the first Caravel was a very clever man, but we can't credit him with the invention. Or with Prince Henry the Navigator and his explorers club in Sagres. We know it existed both from its accomplishments and from letters, but the main archive appears to be lost.

>>18415934That's a lot better than I would have guessed. I suppose many of the Portuguese artists were architects. Do we know how many of those Dutch people were Sephardic Jews descended from ancestors born in Spain?
