Why is the modern world so insistent that there’s no afterlife when pretty much every generation before believed in one?

Modernity doesn't so much deny the idea of the afterlife as much as the idea that the soul is a real thing in the first place. People don't realize how successfully new agers shifted the culture to pantheism even within monotheistic religions. You cease to exist on death but there was no you to really die in the first place, and the baseline for experience is that the individual is the nondescript universe experiencing itself. As for why, it's a neccesity in hyper diverse religiously free countries that the vast bulk of people don't really believe that any spiritual principle is really true, otherwise you have to have uncomfortable conversations aas opposed to just saying reality is what you think it is and everybody's different and right in your own way as part of god tricking itself. It's social utility.

within the christian theological perspective, living after death is a heretical belief. the spirit is passed down the generations through the flesh, and the soul, which is nothing more than a job title, can be reassigned if that role is still needed to serve the heavenly kingdom, which is upon the earth.

That is not a mainstream Christian view, and in most Christian traditions it would be considered doctrinally false rather than orthodox.

Jews traditionally also believe in universal annihilationism. The reason some religions don't believe in an afterlife is because they believe it would be a shallow reason to want to worship and love God. People who believe in an afterlife for example indirectly imply that if there wasn't one they'd have no reason to even be religious. Many philosophers have also pointed out that eternal life may not even be desirable anyways. Sure, it would be nice if we could live longer, but nobody truly wants to life forever.

In the bible Saul summons Samuel's ghost through a witch who practices necromancy.

Why did God allow His servants spirit to be touched by vile magics?

'Eternal truths' should be questioned when they're no longer useful

Most people actually DO believe in an afterlife, even atheists, but they believe in a very very different one to what Abrahamic religions teach.

Speak to practically anyone who's relative passed away. Apart from the most hardcore atheist literalists, the vast majority believe they will see their deceased relatives in some form of afterlife after they die. People even believe they'll see deceased cats and dogs in the afterlife too.

But that's not what Christianity teaches. The Christian afterlife is a strange place where you are just a floating ethereal spirit "praising God" for all eternity. Your marriage is broken up because "there's no need for marriage in 'Heaven' where you can't reproduce". Your relatives who were not religious don't get to go there with you, instead you are brainwashed into believing that them burning in Hell is a "good thing".

The Islamic afterlife is somewhat different in that it is described as a hedonistic paradise full of wine, women and degeneracy, but it keeps the "torturing in Hellfire" part for any of your relatives that weren't Muslim. It's also not very desirable for women because they have to watch their husband cuck them with random women which God provides him.

People understandably don't want to subscribe to either the Christian or Muslim ideas of an afterlife because both are repulsive, in both similar and different ways.

Praising God is your only reason for existence rodent.

Most people understandably aren't enthused by the idea of being a slave to a supernatural being.

Afterlife is just a symbolic trick into making boomers care about future generation that will have to deal with their shit after they fucking die but boomers aren't human so it didn't work out, there's no afterlife when nobody wants to have kids.

Only brown people would fall for such a thing

I wouldn't exactly call these "people"
