Slavery was just one part of the agrarian economic system of the south which was increasingly at discord as the north industrialized. Tariffs were favorable with northern industrialists struggling to compete with then far more advanced and prolific British manufacturing whereas the south gleefully traded with Britain, exporting cotton and importing everything else they need, southern chivalry festooning their homes with the latest fashions among the aristocracy across the pond.The cracks began to show as early as 1828 when South Carolina nullified new tariffs and Andrew Jackson threatened to go to war, but federal government lowkey caved and dropped tariffs. After the war they then immediately cranked it back up to the same levels which was one of the primary reasons reconstruction failed and the deep south formed a new solid voting bloc, which in turn was how they managed to impose Jim Crow and sideline the black vote. The civil rights movement only took off after ww2 when the economy had completely changed and tariffs were no longer in vogue.This is not to say slavery was not a significant factor, the north opposed slavery, but did they oppose it enough to split the country in 2 and lead to an escalation with 500k meeting their deaths? It was a power struggle, it was about money, the system broke down and disputes, such as that at Fort Sumter, were resolved violently and in turn both sides mobilized predicting further hostility. It was very mechanistic and not driven by the slavery issue, by either side.This is not cynicism it is realism. Funding and training armies is a product of systems, not values and ideals, thus it is only when a prevailing system is threatened that it rears its ugly head.
