Glen Ocha was the 60th person executed by Florida in the modern era. In 1999, he murdered a woman he'd picked up in an Oscelo County bar when they had an argument following sex. Not much is known about Ocha's background; he was a Kentucky native born October 10, 1957 and had a history of schizophrenic behavior reportedly related to head injuries he'd sustained as well as an unstable childhood marred by physical and mental abuse. When he was 20, he asked police to shoot him and made a suicide attempt in jail. Ocha enlisted in the Army and was discharged after two years for drug abuse. He was arrested in Orlando, Florida in 1982 after raping a woman and telling her he was going to impregnate her and then commit suicide. The charges were dropped when the victim failed to appear in court.
Ocha was married a few times and fathered one son; one of his wives, Bridgette McStoots, met him at an art supplies store in Louisville and was impressed by his artistic gifts and charming personality. He never acted violent around her, but she knew he was an ex-con and also complained about his inability to hold down a job. That incident happened in 1984 when Ocha shot and gravely injured an Indian-American motel manager named Kiran Patel in Louisville, supposedly because Patel stole some of his belongings and out of racial prejudice against him. The bullet penetrated Patel's brain; he survived but had to relearn numerous basic skills. His sister-in-law claimed Ocha shot him because he tried to collect on an overdue hotel bill. Ocha served 12 years in prison for attempted murder and was paroled in 1996 for good behavior, after which he moved to Florida.
At some point, Ocha obtained a job engraving beer mugs at a bar in Kissimmee and on October 5, 1999, Carole Skjerva, a 28 year old convenience store employee, came into the bar. The two hit it off and Skjerva drove Ocha to her house in Buenaventura Lakes while he was drunk and high on ectsasy. They had intercourse, after which Skjerva threatened to tell her boyfriend and also ridiculed his sexual performance. Ocha lost it at this insulting remark and forced Skjerva to sit in a chair. He tied her up with rope and strangled her three times until his arms became sore. Ocha then hanged her from the kitchen door and drank a beer while she slowly strangled. He took the body and hid it in a home entertainment center in the garage, then took Skjerva's car and drove it to Daytona Beach.Ocha was arrested a short time late for public drunkenness and confessed to murdering Skjerva. Police searched his home and found the body in there. Autopsy determined the cause of death to be ligature strangulation, although decomposition had begun and it was not possible to say if Skjerva had any defensive wounds on her person.
He was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to death on November 1, 2000 after a trial that saw him frequently yell insults and expletives in the courtroom. Ocha admitted that he'd had an argument with his wife Bridgette McStoots as she had recently gotten him jailed on a parole violation and "I wanted to kill a girl who looked like her." Ocha legally changed his name to "Raven Raven" in prison and refused to appeal his sentence. He was executed by lethal injection on April 5, 2005 after a last meal of a fried chicken breast, potato salad, kernel corn, two biscuits and a glass of Pepsi. Ocha offered his apologies to the victim's family; none of them attended the execution.
