He had no idea how wacky their believes were until many years later after his family dropped the Mormon act for reasons I don't even remember. I don't think Mormons are well aware of the retarded theology they follow. It's like the South Park ep, Mormonism help them build strong families and communities and that's enough to them. Of course they're heretics, but God will already judge them (and me, and everyone else).
