The idea was obviously for the bombs to blow up the Dukes car, leaving the driver alive but injured and cleared of suspicion while the assassins finished off the Duke with the pistols they were also carrying. Later on the driver purposefully took a wrong turn before stopping literally beside Princep who just happened to be there with a handgun. And when the shooting began tje driver, instead of continuing to go forward, went into reverse allowing him to shoot both the occupants while the driver was ignored and unharmed.
