Now that the dust has settled... who was in the wrong here? Were Armenians the innocent dindus and Azerbaijanis malevolent kebab (despite being the most secular country in the region)?

the Armenians at least initially were absolutely in the right. despite the Azerbaijani SSR leadership deliberately trying to dilute the Armenian through attempts at repression, assimilation, and migration of Azerbaijanis Nagorno Karabakh was still 3/4 Armenian at the start of the conflict, had the Azerbaijanis and their supporters in the Soviet national leadership just let them unify with Armenia with the Lachin corridor the world would've avoided a ton of bloodshed.
