the tragedy of Judas isn't that he betrayed Christ, it's that he never asked for forgiveness. He took away the gift of life that god/christ gave to him and rejected forgiveness when he made that choice. Judas would have been an apostle if he just repented, but he choose to waste his potential. There is a Borges essay like this where he reevaluates Judas as the true messiah. His argument is that Judas had to suffer for all of eternity in Hell while Jesus only had to suffer a few hours on the cross and that Judas’ suicide and intentionally damning himself was more of a sacrifice for humanity than Jesus’ crucifixion ever was. Judas is as important to Jesus story as Jesus himself was.
