>>18422914People don't grasp just hpw apocalyptic the 19th century was for Spain. Their country was completely destroyed during the Napoleonic wars while their empire collapsed immediately after. Then they had a lengthy series of civil wars over the political orientation of the monarch while their economy was kept on life support by the Cuban saccharocracy. Add to this the fact that the rest of Europe decided to just forget about their cultural contributions (I have never met a non-spanish speaker who knew who Calderón de la Barca was) and you get a very sick country.
