Not really, Greece hasn't been very Hellenic for a thousand plus years at this point, and nearly all the connections between current Hellas (like Athens being the capital, or it being called the 'Hellenic republic') and the old one were created in the 19th century to satisfy the hellenophiles to which they largely owe their independence. Greece was part of the Roman world as much as Britannia for centuries, however the Germanic invasions, Slavic invasions and final schism between the Catholic and Orthodox churches steadily heaped on the differences between east and west. The Islamic invasions did not reach Greece, however they saw a sudden massive decline in the churches of the east and the center of Christianity shift to Rome, so for centuries before the official schism there was already a religious divide with the Orthodox church looking further east to the Slavs and Kievan Rus. The 11th century schism coincided with the beginning of the medieval warm period, crusades and general liveliness in western Europe. The crusades saw a brief recovery of the eastern Empire, but it was soon marked by a slow decline, the massacre of the Latins and the fourth Crusade taking Constantinople.
