I think after a time, Hitler really began to buy his own messianic hype, believing he was the Nietzschean ubermensch himself, and no one on earth could topple his empire, no matter how economically, technologically, and militarily; superior they were. And though he was right that Germany was punching way above their weight class, they weren't playing the game on god mode. But Hitler's rise to power was a series of incredibly risky 1-to-1000 odd gambles that almost miraculously paid off every time. If I started the first half of my life doing incredibly risky things that took me from a poor postcard salesman all the way to a dictator, it's very hard not to believe in your own infallibility. And most dictators actually have a similar life trajectory. Their repeated, incredibly unlikely, early successes doing incredibly risky things; made them come to see themselves as either divine or divinely protected and ordained to rule.
