What impresses me about the Dirlewanger brigade is that they basically acted like the average Japanese soldier acted in Asia but on European soil.

Perhaps less disciplined and very eager on looting, but the Nuremberg Documents do not show anything about them being an anomaly from the other German war criminals. Their reputation mostly comes from other nazis, especially the Waffen-SS trying to shift the blame on them as most of the Dirlewanger Brigade died or went undercover. But no country ever made the effort to specifically focus on them or specifically hunt after the survivors who escaped.
