For Britain India wasn't invaded, British traders and businessmen just inserted themselves into the economy of the subcontinent, and ran things so much better than the locals, they they just kind of came to control the entire country. It was only after the Indian Mutiny, where Indians decided that the best way to establish their independence was to mudertorturerape everything they could find, that the British actually established an official governmental and military presence in the area now known as India.
