Germany was already reduced to batering to settle international trade accounts due to a lack of real currency and had already resorted to looting banks and personal accounts through scams like the MEFO bills. Even Halmar Schacht realized that once they ran out of gimmicks, reality would come and the country would be hit by an economic depression and hyperinflation worse than even the one the Weimar Republic suffered.
