There are some words of gothic origin in slavic languages. Words in slavic languages that mean ruler, helmet, sword, money, buy, loan, medicine, dish, glass, cattle, bread are all probably of gothic origin. So how important were the Goths in slavic ethnogenesis?
>>18431816Sure, but Goths themselves were actually very influenced by iranians in various ways, such as cavalry, archery and even some words. If not by iranians, Goths would be irrelevant as slavs.>So how important were the Goths in slavic ethnogenesisGenetically speaking, basically nothing
>>18431816not important at allirrelevant, reallythat's quite literally how languages work, are you sure the words you mention are loan words that were introduced or are we talking about PIE cognates?in either case I have never heard Goths being in any way relevant to Slavic languages other than their proximity, which is just how every language works
>>18431894IIRC it's some of the words could be cognates and some are really of gothic origin. I read some article that suggested that the Goths may have taught the Slavs some stuff about trade and war and some slavs may have been subjects of the Goths. It's similarly interesting that many slavic words concerning religion are of iranian origin.
>>18432440that's literally just how living in proximity to others works...it's actually funny when couplets happen in languages, if that is what you're talking aboutstill I have never in my life come across something that would point to the Goths having a strong influence on Slavs (more than any other group at least)extremely weird conspiracy theory, why bother with it?
>>18432557It just seems quite interesting. IIRC there's some archeological evidence that the Slavs were a part of the Chernyakov culture, but it's rather speculative. Another theory I read is that a minority of Goths didn't participate in the migration into the Roman empire and stayed behind and were later absorbed by the expanding Slavs. I'm just fascinated by the history of the ancient Slavs and this seems really interesting so I'm trying to find out more.
>>18433269it is interesting, culture/language change over time is very interesting, but to single out the Goths as being in any way influential to Slavic culture is kind of weirdI get it's fun to have like historical theories and conspiracies but this is ancient aliens-tier thinkingGoths were so unimportant that they disappeared very quickly, being either assimilated or otherwise into every other surrounding cultureI do think some cool fiction could take place in a culture that no longer exists
