Soap appears to be a concept that originated in northern Europe during the neolithic. Noticing some different etymological positions, but the idea of soap and the word for it seems to have come from proto-Germanic into Latin, then dispersed into other languages. Very few people outside of northern Europe appear to use it for bathing historically as well. Romans used oil and scraping.
