Even a tin pot dictators backward 3rd world regime would have better record keeping than the Goths and pretty much anyone humping around at that time. We know the french people in France are French because they have records going back over a 1000 yrs about what the French are and where they are. Goths? Frankish identity is equated more to a Mafioso faction allegiance than anything else, if you serve the Frankish King then you are a 'Frank' no matter what your actual background is (i.e that's why Gallo-Romans speaking Vulgar Latin were called Franks despite not speaking Frankish at all)
