why did catholics only recently(historically speaking) confirm the immaculate conception?what did they believe before that?
Liberalism urged religion to discretize and legally codify beliefs which had previously been allowed to be left to custom and folk practice. It just wasn't seen as necessary for a premodern church to make such things so explicit.
>>18439645The Mother of God was preserved from all stain of original sin in order to provide a fitting vessel by which the Incarnate Word could enter the world. This doctrine has been expressed in the litigurical and devotional life of the faith since the times of the ancient church. Dogmas are typically solemnly defined in response to some pressing occasion. With respect to the Immaculate Conception, Pius IX was responding to the groundswell of popular piety and episcopal consensus in favor of the doctrine at the time.
>>18440453This is silly since there's no indication she's unsinful in the Gospels. The opposite in fact. Mark 3:21-31 says "When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind'...Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him."So Mary is only preserved from all stain of sin if calling Jesus out of his mind is somehow free of the stain of sin.
