The logical extreme of this way of thinking is Asceticism and last I checked, literally nobody within Christianity outside of small groups of Clerics such as Hermits are asceticists

>ENJOYING THINGS IS BAD ACTUALLY AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD AND DIE FOR WHATEVER GROUP YOU'RE BORN IN
And people wonder how Marx has ideologically captured Europe. Sad!

Catholics have acquired sainthood by not bathing themselves lmao

Ive seen Orthodox suggest that laughing and smiling are some sort of mortal pollution or the result of an improper mindset so its not horribly surprising to find Catholic documents echoing the same attitude.

How are modern practices relevant to understanding how someone practiced something over a thousand years ago? Are you Christian and trying to skirt around the implication that the religion may have actually grown more lax in its practices over time? Not everyone here believes in capital T Tradition with its silly subtle implication that the larger Church can't actually ever fail at its job. It's a human institution that one day might diverge so much from its origin that if you took someone from 80AD to a certain point in the future they would name the orthodox church of that era heretic. That is a real possibility if you look at this historically without theological scruples.
