The entire strategy was to wipe out the Soviet resistance as fast as possible before you run out of oil so that you can secure Soviet oil. But I guess they didn't anticipate lend lease. All war comes down to at the end of the day is supply.
Japan signed a Soviet-Japan neutrality pact on April 13th, 1941 (in the midst of the Battle of Moscow) and Stalin mobilized and relocated his troops (along with Zukov) Eastern Russia to Western Russia to take on the Germans/Italians and Japan, was tricked by a double communist agent to attack America instead of the Soviet Union as intended.Japan really fucked it up for the axis.

Germany wasn't prepared to fight a country so big with so many resources, with the resources it had. The Wehrmacht was very effective though, so it had an easy time of it before logistics got stretched thin, the winter set in, and the USSR was better mobilized. They needed a better plan and more resources and to better supply and defend their front lines, given the Soviets' capabilities.
